CSR in the Spotlight

Today, many areas around the world are dealing with unprecedented levels of displacement due to conflict. According to the UN Refugee Agency, there are about 99,000 refugees from Myanmar living in Thailand across nine camps, plus 7,000 urban refugees and asylum seekers and 490,000 people registered as stateless.

To support refugees while also providing hotel customers with a sustainable solution for solid soap waste and end-of-life linens, Diversey Thailand has introduced the Soap For Hope and Linens For Life programs to the Thai Refugees Foundation, which provides ongoing assistance to refugees.

We are pleased to have received the 2018 AMCHAM Corporate Social Responsibility Excellence Recognition, which shines a light on the hard work our team has executed in Thailand. AMCHAM Thailand is the leading international business association in Thailand, which aims to promote an open and robust business climate between Thailand and the United States.

A Win-Win for Everyone

Launched in 2013, the Soap For Hope program works with more than 500 hotels in 39 countries, collecting solid soap waste. Those living in underserved areas are taught the cold-press method to sanitize and reshape the soap slivers into full-sized bars. All projects are run by local nonprofits and pay the workers, who can then distribute the soap bars to encourage proper hand hygiene in places where soap is often considered a luxury. Since its launch, Soap For Hope has collected 2,623 metric tons of soap waste from 540 partner hotels and created nearly 21.4 million bars of new soap.

Linens For Life was built on the same idea that hotel waste can be diverted from landfills. Diversey collects linens that have reached the end of their useful life at these properties. Then, communities receive basic training on sewing so they can transform these linens into new and useful items. Bulky linens stay out of landfills and individuals in the program gain a sense of pride and a livelihood by creating and selling things like pillow cases, tote bags and clothing. Since 2011, Diversey has collected nearly 25 tons of linen—the equivalent of 16,000 queen-sized bedsheets.

Recognition for our Efforts

In addition to the honor from AMCHAM, Diversey was also recently awarded the Green Leader Award by Hilton for our leadership in sustainability and corporate social responsibility. Hilton has been a long-time partner of our CSR programs and truly recognizes the importance that they deliver.

We want to thank our hotel customers and our partner non-governmental organizations (NGOs) who are supporting these CSR programs, or “Creating Shared Value” programs as they are known at Diversey. These efforts are truly making a difference in the lives of the underserved individuals. Plus, the programs help the hospitality industry reduce its environmental footprint and support local communities.

Awards such as these are confirmation of the value we are delivering to these individuals and businesses, and propel us to grow these programs and find new ways to support the environment and those in need.
