Fulfilling our Goals for a Sustainable Future: Part 1

Because the changes we make today can have a positive and lasting effect on future generations, Sealed Air and Diversey Care are committed to sustainability. One way we’re helping to improve our planet is through the World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) Climate Savers program, which encourages member organizations to drastically reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and influence market or policy developments affecting sustainability.

In 2008, Diversey Care originally committed to reduce absolute GHG emissions eight percent below 2003 levels by 2013, but increased the commitment to 25 percent in 2009. At the end of 2013, we recorded a reduction in absolute CO2 emissions by more than 48 percent from 2003 levels.

Our emissions reduction strategy focused on four key areas, including:

  1. Company fleet transportation

We converted our North American fleet to higher efficiency vehicles to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Although they require a higher initial investment, the fuel savings offset these costs.

  1. Manufacturing sites and operations

Four of our European manufacturing sites collaborated to improve factory efficiency and reduce energy. We also installed high-efficiency lighting in our flagship European manufacturing facility in the Netherlands to reduce electricity use by more than 10 percent in a single year. Plus, we developed a new energy reporting tool to enable management to view energy consumption and emission data for each site and region across the globe.

  1. Offices and laboratories

We installed a fuel cell and wind turbines at our global headquarters in Wisconsin to generate onsite power. We’ve also committed to using LEED principles in the design and operation of all leased and built facilities.

  1. Business air travel

Eliminating the use of private aircraft removed 4000 MT which accounted for more than three percent of our 2003 baseline.

We’ve been able to surpass our goals through the commitment of everyone within our organization, from senior leadership to frontline employees. We’re currently working on setting new company-wide energy and GHG reduction targets to continue our involvement in the WWF Climate Savers program. I’m confident that our innovative tactics and commitment will help us reach these goals as well.
