The Power and Importance of Ecolabels

Today, customers can easily be overwhelmed by the number of “green” products and services on the market. Selecting the right solution is further complicated by the fact that some of these products are not truly environmentally friendly. In fact, one study found that 98 percent of products marketed as green were guilty of making a false claim, otherwise known as greenwashing. 

Thankfully, independent verification by reputable organizations can ensure that products deliver on their promised sustainability performance. The demand for environmentally certified products is growing, with forty percent of consumers in markets such as the U.K., the U.S., Brazil, China, Germany, and India considering certification labels on products to be the most trusted indicator of a product’s environmental or social responsibility.

Underwriters Laboratories, a more than 100-year-old company, certifies products with well-known ecolabels like GREENGUARD and ECOLOGO under its UL Environment (ULE) business unit. ULE also focuses on environmental claim verifications (ECV) for innovative technologies, even where standards do not currently exist. 

Pursuing an ECV requires protocol development, rigorous testing, auditing, and data analysis to quantify the sustainability benefits of a technology. If the technology delivers on its claim, products can carry the ECV ‘badge’ as recognition of a validated environmental claim, and are listed in UL’s sustainable product database. Although achieving an ECV takes a lot of work, it serves as a sign of trust and transparency in support of an environmental claim.

Validating IntelliFlow

TASKI IntelliFlow uses real-time adjustments to deliver precise amounts of cleaning solution and water onto the floor based on the speed of the machine and the turning radius. These adjustments decrease water and chemical consumption, reduce time-consuming tank fills, and lower costs. This also ensures that an excess of solution isn’t left on the floor in the turn, which would increase the risk of a slip and fall accident.

The Diversey TASKI team inquired with ULE about an ECV that would validate the water and chemical savings delivered by IntelliFlow. Auto scrubbers with and without IntelliFlow were sent to a test facility where ULE conducted a series of tests to measure water and chemical consumption in a variety of scenarios. 

The Results

ULE determined that TASKI floor scrubbers with IntelliFlow saved an average of 76 percent water and chemicals compared to TASKI floor scrubbers without IntelliFlow. The following TASKI swingo models now carry the Environmental Claims Validation badge: 755 E, 855 B, 1255, 1650, 1850, 1655, 1855, XP-R, XP-M, 2100 micro, 2500, 4000 and 5000.

By saving water, customers can go longer between tank fillings, which can take 20-30 minutes per machine. Customers also reduce chemical waste, which results in less spend. Controlling the amount of water and chemical on the floor ensures floors are properly cleaned and dried.
